On Friday September 14th, 2016, the Consulate General of Mexico in Guangzhou celebrated the 206th Anniversary of the Independence of Mexico hosting a reception in the Guangzhou Grand Hyatt Hotel, and also taking this opportunity to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the Consulate General of Mexico in Guangzhou since 2006.
The Consul General of Mexico in Guangzhou, Carlos I. Giralt Cabrales welcomed around 300 guests that included Chinese authorities, business people, representatives of culture and education institutions, the media and other friends and partners of Mexico in Guangzhou and other cities in Southern China. Representatives of around 40 foreign Consulates, including more than 20 Consuls General attended the reception too. The guest of honor was Mr. LI Yiwei, Deputy Secretary General of People’s Government of Guangdong Province, while attending the Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Ms. LI Ming, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Mr. HE Jian, Chairman of CCPIT Hunan, and authorities from Guangdong, Hunan and Hainan provinces; authorities from Guangzhou, Foshan, Taishan and other cities.
In the official ceremony the National Anthems of the United Mexican States and the People’s Republic of China were sung. Consul General Carlos I. Giralt Cabrales delivered a speech appreciating the great efforts made by the Consular Corp during the past ten years, and also mentioning the long history of exchange and friendship between Mexico, Guangdong and Southern China.
Mexico has a long history of friendship and exchanges with China, especially with the southern part of this great country. When the Chinese migration arrived into Mexico in the late XIX century, a good portion came from the Guangdong province; as it is still the case nowadays with the Chinese citizens that have chosen Mexico as their second home. Following this rich history, today the friendship and cooperation between Mexico and Southern China have multiplied. Just to mention an example, in matters of trade, Guangdong and Fujian provinces combined, represent a significant portion of the total trade between Mexico and China. At the national level, China is the first trade partner for Mexico in Asia; and the second in the whole world.The trade and commerce between Mexico and Guangdong surpassed 10.5 USD billion in 2015. Several companies from Guangdong are among the largest Chinese investors in Mexico, meanwhile dozens of Mexican companies, most of them, small and medium, are based in Southern China, especially in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen.
Mr. LI Yiwei, Deputy Secretary General of People’s Government of Guangdong Province stressed in his speech that both China and Mexico are known to the world as ancient civilizations. Both countries’ forefathers not only created splendid civilizations of our two countries, but also initiated our trade and cultural exchanges. Ever since the elevation of bilateral relations to comprehensive strategic partnership level, China and Mexico had frequent exchange of high-level visits between our leaders. Not long ago, President of Mexico, Mr. Peña Nieto attended the G20 which was successfully held in Hangzhou. President Xi Jinping met with President Peña and suggested that China and Mexico should maintain frequent exchanges of high-level visits, promote more exchanges at different levels and areas and plan well the road map for China-Mexico cooperation for the next five years.
